Are dress codes in workplace important?

August 21st, 2010

Are dress codes important?

It’s a very interesting question. If you sit to discuss about dress codes you might end up in a debate. Creating a dress code for a workplace can be a tricky thing. Fashion is the word of the day and in such an atmosphere dress codes can certainly be a helping hand.

Why are dress codes implemented?

It’s very important to maintain dress codes in an office. Young boys and girls often dress shabbily without bothering what the world has to say. A compulsory dress code can keep them under control and maintain a decent image in public.

If no dress codes are maintained in a workplace then anyone will wear anything of his/her choice. This will distract other employees and have a severe impact on their performance. If a colleague proves to be a distraction the other employees will have a hard time concentrating on their work. Dress codes have to be reasonable depending on the type of work.

Dress Codes for employees

It’s very important that employees sign in neat for work. They might opt for casual or formal business attire, but this is something that will vary greatly from setting to setting.

Some things that are completely against dress codes are:
• Clothing which has an abusive and foul language
• Tank tops, muscle shirts or halter tops
• Wearing torn jeans and tops
• Hats or caps
• Wearing sweaty pants or sweat suits

What things should employers keep in mind at the time of deciding a dress code?

Dress codes have to be reasonable depending on the type of work. At the time of developing a dress ode the employer should ensure that they are:
• Job related
• Not treating one sex less favorably than the other
• Not treating one race less favorably than the other

It’s very important that the employer communicates these dress codes to the employees, for them to follow.

Shoes Worn For Safety Can Be Fashionable

August 21st, 2010

There are many hazardous occupations that require people to wear safety boots. This style of shoe can be very uncomfortable at first because they are usually made of cowhide leather that refuses to bend and causes blisters to form on the heel of the foot. After the breaking in period has passed though, these shoes worn for safety reasons can make a fashion statement in the workplace.

Some styles of safety boots are styled specifically for military personnel. These shoes are usually part of the uniform and must be impeccable in appearance at all times. Every construction rating will receive a pair at boot camp and other occupations in the military arsenal of jobs will get them only if they want to because they are considered an optional uniform item.

Some military people will devote a lot of time to making the safety shoes shine. They will put a good amount of time and effort into creating a fashionable footwear item out of safety boots that they work in everyday in the line of duty. These safety shoes often reach up to the knee and are laced very rigidly in a precise method. Some people use floor wax to create an instant shine but regret it later due to wax build-up that makes them look less than fashionable for the rest of their tour of duty.

While most shoes that are worn with safety in mind might seem to be fashionable on the outside, they are truly difficult to wear because of the steel plate that is mounted at the toe line. Many scuffs occur around this area of the safety shoes because the safety shoe wearers have a difficult time determining how far up they need to step because of the added weight that comes from the steel plate.

This steel plating has been known to save people from losing their toes. Most accidents are not realized because with the steel toes in place, a safety boot wearer never feels anything but a thud. These fashionable footwear choices might be a bit cumbersome to wear but the safety features they offer also offer a great value because they can be worn for years without incurring replacement costs.

There are other reasons why safety shoes are worn by so many people. These fashionable footwear items are offered in styles that are curved at the ankle with a steel plate in the heel, or they can be found in padded styles that are perfect for someone that works in hot environments. There is also a style of safety boot that has no ties or straps, because hot liquids can be poured into them in the workplace and the wearer might need to kick them off very fast.

Can Your Work Uniform Save Your Life?

August 20th, 2010

Work uniforms do not exist solely for the purpose of fostering a feeling of solidarity, they can also be functional. Uniforms for certain professions offer protection as well. We will look at some of the professions that have both a symbolic and functional or protective purpose for wearing uniforms. Here, we consider the professions of a chemist or someone who works in a chemistry lab, a firefighter and a football player.

People who work in laboratories often handle chemicals. Some of these chemicals can be dangerous and can cause a lot of harm if they come into contact with skin. Additionally, doctors also wear lab coats to minimize the risk of being exposed to any infectious material. Lastly, lab coats can be used to protect against fire. Some lab coats are made of a flame retardant material, but the main advantage that a lab coat wearer has is the fact that the coat itself can quickly be removed and isolated from the rest of the body.

All the professionals who work in this environment will wear lab coats, both to provide them with the protection that they need and also to make the distinction that they are members of staff of that particular organization. Some lab coats may have branding or insignias of the specific organization that they work for, but in cases like this, the symbolic or branding aspect of the lab coat is only secondary.

Another set of professionals that deal with fire and are also required to wear work uniforms are fire fighters. Fighting fire is a very dangerous profession and requires individuals who are courageous and giving. While courage and bravery play an important role, these individuals aren’t superhuman. They cannot withstand high temperatures without some sort of protective clothing.

This is where the fire fighters’ work uniforms play a significant part. The uniforms not only have the fire department branding and the name of the fire fighter, but it also has the capability of protecting the fire fighter during his most dangerous part of working running into burning buildings to save civilians. We were all able to instantly recognize the heroic New York City fire fighters during the September 11th attacks by the distinctive “FDNY” branding on their uniforms.

Individuals engaged in sports will also wear uniforms and some of them also offer protective features. Football and Ice Hockey players not only have team colors, but also have a lot of protective gear that goes on as part of their uniform. It is easy to pick out the distinctive uniform of an American Football player because of its unique design. The same can be said for the Ice Hockey uniforms as well.

The marrying of the symbolic and functional nature of uniforms is not new; it has been around for a long time and is a clever way of both projecting a team or organizations solidarity without having to sacrifice the protective aspects as well.

Collect some of your children’s used clothing to create a memorable quilt. Choose old sports t-shirts, theater t-shirts, words t-shirts, volunteer t-shirts and any other item that is important to your kids. Choose approx 12-15 shirts to design your quilt. The main fabric of the quilt will be used in between each t-shirt and on the back for support. This is a great high school or college graduation gift.

Idea 2

Search through you used clothes to select pieces with unique pattern, textures and materials. Textures such as silk, wool and cashmere make great crafts materials. Idea 3

Take some of your favorite used clothing pieces to a local fashion student or designer. Ask them update the piece to be in fashion and let them use their creativity to design and recreate new clothing items for your old items. This is a great option for fashion conscious teenagers as well as you end up with several unique designs by recycling old pieces. It will be a complete surprise as to what they design specifically for you. You can also have your old and worn clothing pieces re-created by taking them to a fashion designer or materials with fabric samples to match.
